Magazines and food share similarities when you really think about it. Both offer essential content, but it’s the presentation that truly captivates. That’s why the diverse food magazine, Famous For My Dinner Parties, enlisted the talented designer Lind Haugaard to design its second issue. The result is a delectable A5 magazine packed with passion, personality, and vibrant visuals.
Lind describes the magazine as a celebration and critique of food culture, especially from the perspective of millennials who are food enthusiasts but also skeptical of food trends. The magazine humorously explores the intersection of different culinary influences, such as Japanese cuisine being adapted by Europeans.
Despite the belief that green magazine covers don’t attract attention on newsstands, Lind took a bold approach by using a green cover for Famous For My Dinner Parties. She revamped the typography, introduced better organization, and featured a quirky croissant from Lafayette Grand Bakery as the cover star.
Cover design is crucial for magazines, and Famous For My Dinner Parties often features food with expressive faces on its covers. Lind explains that she embraced the cartoonish energy of the masthead by incorporating a glossy finish using a typeface called UVAS. This choice reflects the indulgent and trendy aspects of food culture.
Founded in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, Famous For My Dinner Parties transitioned from an online project to an annual print magazine in 2023. Each issue is a collaborative effort between various writers, illustrators, and photographers, united by Lind’s editorial design expertise.
Lind’s design philosophy for the magazine was to give each feature a distinct identity. She opted to let each article shine individually, embracing visual diversity to capture readers‘ attention in a world of short attention spans. This approach made the design process more enjoyable and engaging for both the design team and the audience.
