Existential anxiety permeates Beach Bunny’s latest album, Tunnel Vision. Lili Trifilio, the frontperson, sings about the fear of change and the world’s deteriorating state. Despite the heavy themes, the band’s catchy hooks and lively melodies guide Trifilio through her struggles with self-sabotage and uncertainty. The process of writing the album was not easy, as Trifilio faced writer’s block initially. However, delving into her own thoughts helped her find inspiration and create more introspective lyrics. The group, including bassist Anthony Vaccaro and drummer Jon Alvarado, recorded the LP in 2024 with producer Sean O’Keefe, experimenting with their pop-punk sound. Trifilio’s lyrics reflect her inner struggles, resonating with listeners who may also be battling their inner demons.
We caught up with Lili Trifilio to discuss the making of Tunnel Vision, performing the new songs live, nostalgia, and more.
How has your day been so far? It’s noon there, right?
It’s been good. I just woke up. We had a show in Toronto yesterday and crossed the border to Detroit early this morning. I decided to sleep in after the early start.

Yes, they’re awesome.
You mentioned recording Tunnel Vision with the goal of translating the songs live. How has that approach been working out?
We were nervous about playing new songs before the release, but the rock-focused sound of Tunnel Vision feels familiar for Beach Bunny. It’s been amazing to see the excitement from fans who already know the lyrics after just a few days of the album being out.
When you started writing songs for Tunnel Vision, you had more time to reflect on yourself and the world compared to Emotional Creature. How did the songwriting process unfold for you?
Around the latter half of 2023, I started to regain my creative flow. I took a break from putting pressure on myself to write music, which helped. By the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024, half of the record was written. Touring and busy summers inspired more songs, which we recorded in October. We selected the best songs from different writing sessions to create a cohesive album.
You mentioned writing ‚Vertigo‘ on a plane. Do melodies come and go for you, or do you have a process for capturing them?
I try to save inspiration when it strikes, whether that’s recording a snippet in a voice memo or jotting down lyrics. ‚Vertigo‘ was a breakthrough moment that made writing other songs easier.
Your voice on Tunnel Vision feels more urgent and emotive. Was that a conscious choice while recording?
It was likely a subconscious choice. I was inspired by different vocal techniques and styles of music while writing Tunnel Vision. The influence of friends and other artists also played a role in shaping the album’s sound.
Do you have any friends or bands you’d like to shout out?
Charly Bliss is an amazing band that I was listening to while working on Tunnel Vision. Their distinct style and sound were inspiring to me. Mein Freund Hank Heaven, der mehr experimentelle Country-Sachen macht. Rafaella, die viel mehr in der Pop-Welt ist. Diese Band in Chicago, Football Head, hat mehr Pop-Punk-Elemente. Du sprichst darüber, dass eine Erinnerung unvollständig ist, aber hast du jetzt auf irgendeine Weise eine klarere Perspektive auf die Vergangenheit?
Ich denke, dieses Album hat mir in vielerlei Hinsicht geholfen, einige dieser Emotionen zu verarbeiten. Aber ja, Nostalgie ist etwas, das mich beeinflusst und auch mein Schreiben beeinflusst, und ich denke, es gibt auf dem Album eine Menge Sehnsucht nach einfacheren Zeiten im Allgemeinen. Während ich auch denke: Vor fünf Jahren gab es Probleme, vor zehn Jahren gab es Probleme. Es gab nie eine perfekte Zeit in der Menschheitsgeschichte, um ein funktionsfähiger Mensch zu sein. Es wird immer Dinge geben, ob persönlich oder in der Welt. Ich denke manchmal ist es einfach, die Vergangenheit zu romantisiseren, bis man wirklich darüber nachdenkt, „Wie war mein Denken, als ich 19 war?“ Und wenn ich so darüber nachdenke, bin ich jetzt, mit 28, sehr dankbar und fühle mich viel selbstbewusster und habe ein besseres Verständnis davon, wer ich bin als in der Vergangenheit.
