Learning about Adriana’s fate from showrunner David Chase, de Matteo filmed the scene where Adriana gets killed in two ways to keep the outcome a secret until it aired. Despite the emotional intensity of the scene, de Matteo found it a relief to have minimal dialogue, allowing her to focus on the character’s emotions. The impact of Adriana’s death on viewers was significant, with many questioning the character’s fate due to the show’s reputation for unexpected twists and turns. The experience led de Matteo to appreciate the opportunity and her character’s journey on the acclaimed series. „I know how to do that,“ said Drea de Matteo. „Adriana is killed by Silvio, played by Steven Van Zandt, and I was more concerned about making Steven feel comfortable. He was upset that he had to pull me out of the car by my hair but I told him not to worry. He also objected to calling me a cunt but I was like: “It’s OK! I’ll call you a cunt first. Let’s fucking go!”
David insisted on not showing the moment of death. He told me he loved Adriana and didn’t want to see her actually get killed. So she crawls across the forest floor to get away, then you hear gunshots as the camera pans up. Some fans interpreted that as her soul going up to heaven. Stevie went on Jay Leno’s show and he asked: “Is she really dead?” Stevie said: “What the fuck do you think I was doing out there? Shooting squirrels?” That was confirmation for anyone clinging to the hope that she’d survived. My parents couldn’t watch it. Fans freaked out. I got messages saying: “I just cancelled HBO in protest.”
„I won an Emmy for the role,“ she continued. „I used to hide it away in the bathroom but during the pandemic, I put it on the mantelpiece to celebrate my past. We were the godfathers. We redefined what TV could do. Twenty years later, people are still being moved by Adriana’s death.“

Lisa Faulkner played MI5 agent Helen Flynn, who had her head shoved into a deep fat fryer by a far-right leader in Spooks. She auditioned for the role of Zoe but ended up playing a character who dies in two episodes. The deep-fat fryer scene got 250 complaints, but Lisa took it as a compliment. She enjoyed the action scenes and even got a great funeral in the show.
Kristine Sutherland played Buffy’s mother Joyce Summers, who died of a brain aneurysm in The Body, a landmark episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Playing a corpse for an entire episode was one of the hardest things she ever did, as it brought out emotions from her own experiences. The fight scene in the morgue was particularly challenging, but amidst all the supernatural action, her death felt real. Ich bin oft skeptisch, den schwarzen Mann zu spielen, der stirbt, aber Gurke war völlig anders. Es war nicht nur ein Geschenk einer Rolle – es erzählte eine Wahrheit über einige Liaisons in der schwulen Gesellschaft. Beim Treffen mit Fremden, besonders in den frühen Morgenstunden hinter verschlossenen Türen, musst du vorsichtig sein.
Alle Warnzeichen waren da. Alles an diesem Typen schrie: „Bleib verdammt noch mal weg!“ Doch es zeigt, wie verzweifelt die Menschen nach Liebe sind, besonders wenn du sie in deinem Leben versteckt hast. Du vergibst und übersiehst rote Flaggen, bis du in Schwierigkeiten bist. Als ich recherchierte, wie viele Todesfälle in und um die Canal Street [Manchesters „Gay Village“] geschehen, war es ernüchternd. Die Menschen suchen nach Intimität, aber begnügen sich mit Lust.

Du siehst wenig vom tödlichen Schlag. Es ist hauptsächlich im Gesicht. Es war ein Golfschläger, weil es die Art von Waffe ist, die wahrscheinlich in diesem Raum des Typen ist. Es ist schrecklich, das Gesicht einer Person in ihren letzten Momenten zu betrachten. Zuerst ist es Schock und Empörung, dann Traurigkeit und Reue. Es ist keine cartoonhafte Gewalt. Es hat eine viszerale Realität.
Es ist eine lange Szene und das Filmen dauerte ewig. Ich musste still sitzen bleiben mit der Wundschminke und dem ausgestoßenen Blut. Es war schwierig, emotional über vier Stunden in Nahaufnahme am richtigen Ort zu bleiben. An einem Punkt begann mein ganzer Körper zu zittern. Das Leben von Lance wurde von Eurythmics und Annie Lennox vertont, also hatte ich diese Lieder im Kopf, als ich dort saß. Wenn du eine Träne über meine Wange rollen siehst, dann weint Lance, nicht ich. Ich habe immer noch eine Lance-Playlist auf meinem Handy.
Als die Episode ausgestrahlt wurde, war ich in einem Stück in Norwich. Ich ging zurück in meine Garderobe und mein Telefon war voll. Ich bin nicht in sozialen Medien, aber ein Freund hatte Seiten und Seiten von Reaktionen auf Lance’s Episode fotografiert und gesagt: „Du bist im Trend!“ Ich saß dort, halb in Kostüm, und las all diese schönen Nachrichten. Owen Jones schrieb darüber in der Guardian. Nach 30 Jahren im Beruf bekam ich eine Bafta-Nominierung. Einen schwulen Teil zu spielen und diese enorme Reaktion zu bekommen, war fantastisch. Erst vor zwei Tagen kam ein junger Mann auf mich zu und sagte mir, dass es sein Leben verändert hat.
